Hijacking Americana
Three aliens toting AK-47s in black garb ride a white whale that has been muzzled. Crude oil is gushing where three machetes have been thrust into the whale. The US national debt total is exposed and a flag stuck into the whales back displays the phrase, American Dream, in Arabic lettering. The wide sand dune scene is overshadowed by a trail of crude oil that becomes a reservoir in the distance. Hijacking Americana was on display January 4 - 26, 2017 at Baton Rouge Gallery – center for contemporary art (“BRG”) with 58 other artists (representing 26 different states) that have been selected for inclusion in Surreal Salon 9. The national juried exhibition highlights the growing quality and popularity of the pop-surrealist/lowbrow movement in American contemporary art. This year's exhibition was juried by one of the most respected artists working within that movement, Greg “Craola” Simkins.
